Sound
Sample of the music
The music used in this opening sequence gives a feel of tranquility to the whole movie, The director begins with just a few repeated notes this could have been done to mimic feelings of the boy at the beginning, meaning that he has felt the way he felt about that girl for so long so his feelings are repeated feelings just like the notes. The music used is contrapuntal because this music is calm and the the type of music you'd listen to when you're on the beach because it sounds like still drums whereas while this music is playing they a showing a picture of a dead girl. This might have been done to wake the audience up. The music continues all they way through until about 52 seconds, it is still on when the movie starts this could have been done so that the audience is not too shocked over seeing the dead body and so therefore the genre is not easy to guess. But with the music on it confuses the audience.
Editing
This is the logo of the distributing company. It contradicts what it says when it says 'Focus Features' because most of the frames in the opening sequence begin out of focus. Not only do the frames begin out of focus we can see that even the bubbles they used in the background in the picture below is out of focus. By them using using out of focus images it makes the audience remember the contradiction and of course the movie.
The use of shot-reverse-shot would have been to show how the boy felt because he could not stop looking at the girl laying there dead. He might have been in so much shock/disbelief that he didn't know what to do.
This is also an example of eye line match because the camera follows his eyes onto the girl, by the camera moving is also makes the audience move and question for itself whats going on because it seems like the guy has just seen her.
This shows a good use of graphic match because it helps the audience join the dots that the girl laying down dead was the same girl that put a note in his locker therefore meaning that they do actually have a connection some how.
The tittle of the movie came on after about 1 minute of the movie being shown and this could have been so that the audience don't forget what the tittle is because if you put it at the beginning the audience is too enticed to the movie to remember whereas if you put it after something drastic has been revealed like the dead body then the audience will not forget.
Cinematography
The first image that the audience sees is the extreme close up of the guys shoes, the camera slowly crab shots down the pavement where we see his shoes which seems like a useless shot and may leave the audience in clueless until we see those shoes again near the lockers therefore making us connect the dots to show that it is the same guy.
The use of a tight focus and extreme close up is then used when we first see the guy and his face is blurry this is all connected to the mysteriousness of the movie to not let the audience know to much but then by doing this is makes the audience more eager to find out who it it. (Below Picture)
The close up used when the girl is dead in the water is very important because you can see from her bangles that she was the same girl putting the note in his locker. This has two outcomes, it may make the guy look guilty because she told him where to meet or it may make the audience empathize with him because they were friends and she wanted to meet up and when he got there and found her dead he was sad.
When the picture becomes more clear it could show that the boy now knows his true emotion towards the situation because when his face was out of focus he had cloudy judgement. The fact that it is a close up could show that the director wanted to bring the attention to the boys eyes because all true judgement comes from the eye. From this we can see his emotionless because he doesn't know what to do so not only his body froze but his emotions froze with him.
This shows that the shots used a canted shots they are generally used to put the audience off and confuse it in a way because why would the camera tilt to a certain angle? This makes them stop and think.
This is an establishing shot it shows the relationship between the characters and by this we can see that he might know her because he is crouching away from her maybe in a moment of disbelief so he doesn't want to get too close because that might be his friend. This shot also shows us how lifeless she is because some parts of her body are in the water and she cant move them reaffirming the fact that she is dead.
This is a extreme long shot and the first we have actually see of this boy and it is still not a clear picture. Which adds to the mystery and makes the audience question why the director is hiding him.
Mise-En-Scene
The lady when we see her is wearing heels which shows that she was vulnerable at the time of her death therefore making the audience sympathetic towards her because its hard for a woman to run in heels so she had no escape.
The boys glasses give him a geeky feel and makes everyone wonder why he is talking a girl like that because its stereotypical that geeks don't talk to girls cause they are scared of them.
The lighting used is high key lighting because the the scenes are all well lit and this takes away the feel of horror.
We don't see much of the boy but the little we see it shows us that he is sad and in just fool shock over whats happened to his friend. The setting is a weird place the tunnel because you would not expect normal people to be there so maybe is gives a clue that he might have followed her somewhere. The fact its also set in a school gives a away a point that in school your safe but then you go to the complete end and go to a tunnel.
